A flow restrictor is used in reverse osmosis systems at the outlet of the membrane housing to flow the rejected water and contaminants to the drain. It works by restricting the water outflow from the membrane, which causes a pressure increase, thereby initiating the process of reverse osmosis separation.

Note: Often the small openings or tubes in a flow control valve can become plugged, slowing or stopping the pure water production rate, it is advisable to replace this valve when replacing your membrane.
