Activated carbon, in one form or another, is a component of almost every water filtration system in the world. This is because it is the most effective way to reduce chlorine and other types of chemical contamination commonly found in water, thereby improving taste and odour. These contaminants adsorb (stick to the surface) on the carbon, which has an incredibly high surface area owing to its complex pore structure.

However, this does not mean that all activated carbons are equal. Activated carbon can be made from many different base materials, including coal, wood, lignite, and coconut shell.
